Popular restaurant and brewery in Collinsville to expand. Other projects on the way

Breaking news image

Are outdoor pavilions and custard shops going to be a (good) thing in our area?

First it was Eckert’s in Belleville; now it’s Old Herald Brewery & Distillery in Collinsville.

Old Herald is expanding and will soon include a frozen custard shop and an entertainment pavilion.

The building that previously housed Pic-A-Place Travel Inc. at 201 N. Morrison Ave. was demolished Tuesday, March 8, marking the official beginning of the project by 115 E. Clay LLC, Ardent Spirits, Inc., perhaps known best as Old Herald Brewery & Distillery.

Plans for the newly cleared area are to build a new custard shop, Uptown Scoops, which will be located on the corner of Clay Street and Morrison Avenue, and an entertainment pavilion between the custard shop and Old Herald’s existing patio area.

The custard shop is to be constructed from a 10-by-40-foot shipping container (way to upcycle!) and will have ordering and pick-up windows, according to a recent Sauce Magazine article.

It’ll include a rooftop deck that will seat up to 20 people and a patio that will hold up to 40.

A second shipping container will be used to provide outdoor heated and air-conditioned restrooms, the article states.

A message was sent to Uptown Scoops owner Donna Green – no relation.

I’ll share the scoop (lame dad joke - not just for dads) on that part of the expansion when I get it.

The pavilion will be used as an outdoor venue for live music, a regular thing at Old Herald, and other performances and events.

In addition to the project’s new bits, there are also plans to redevelop the property at 101-103 E. Clay St., which once included Habitat for Humanity ReStore shop, Landstar Trucking and a barber shop as tenants, according to city documents.

Documents show that the barber shop will remain. The rest of the space will be redeveloped to include “an indoor event space [for events like wedding receptions, retirement parties, tasting dinners] … (located in the old ReStore space); a boutique space (located in the previous Landstar office, tenant TBD) and a potential sports bar … located between Old Herald and the barber shop.”

The basement of the property will serve as packaging and warehouse space for Ardent Spirits and Old Herald Brewing.

The application with these plans was submitted in November. I’d like to see if anything has changed, particularly where that sports bar (fun!) is concerned.

The Sauce article reported that Old Herald owner Derik Reiser is looking to open in early June.

I’ve reached out to Reiser to request an interview. I will share new info as it comes my way.
