Landmark metro-east ice cream shop reducing hours as it looks for new employees
A metro-east ice cream shop that has operated for 68 years is reducing hours, asking the public to weigh in on other changes and looking for new employees to help with the workload.
Dairy Haven in Caseyville announced Thursday via social media that it has to minimize operating hours “due to the amount of stress on [their] employees.”
The May 26 Facebook post states ice cream shop will either shut down the walk-up window or the drive-thru. The Dairy Haven is asking the public for its input about which should be closed.
Owner Susan Hill is also looking to hire new employees that are willing to work and “would come back after the first day or even show up on the first day,” according to the Facebook post.
People don’t come back, said Hill, who feels it’s “too much for them to handle.”
It takes three to four weeks to train new employees, she said. The job isn’t something that can be learned in one day.
Hill said anyone interested in applying for a job at Dairy Haven can come to the shop.
Positions start at minimum wage ($12 an hour). Employees are able to work their way up.
Dairy Haven first opened in 1954 and has had multiple owners over the years.
Hill took ownership of the business in January 2001. She is the shop’s seventh owner.
Dairy Haven is located at 112 N. Main St. in Caseyville.
Starting in June, hours will be 2-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
