Change of plans: Collinsville custard shop leaves Herald Square for new space nearby

A while back I first wrote about the new development at Old Herald Brewery & Distillery, which originally included a new custard shop, Uptown Scoops.

Well, those plans have changed a bit.

As mentioned in a report last week, the repurposed shipping container at Herald Square is now “Cold Herald” Ice Creamery, Gelato and Tasty Treats.

So what happened to Uptown Scoops?

According to Uptown Scoops owner Donna Green (still no relation), the frozen custard shop is currently under construction at 403 W. Main St., just a few blocks from its original location.

Green said the decision to break away from Herald Square was a mutual one between her and Old Herald owner Derik Reiser.

Green’s vision is of a more family-oriented atmosphere. The new location will allow her to accomplish that.

Green said she was often asked if there would be any boozy custard concoctions. That concept doesn’t fit with what she wants to do with Uptown Scoops.

Green will stick to her original plan of focusing on custard flavors, experimenting with new recipes and providing freshly baked cookies made from her own recipes.

During the cooler months, gourmet hot chocolate will be added to the menu.

The site plans approved by the city for Green’s project incorporate more than just the custard shop and its patio seating. There’s a playground area for the kids, a dog area for the fur babies, and a fire pit area for everyone. A space for yard games will also be available.

A restroom/storage area is also shown on the site plan.

Collinsville residents and business owners wrote letters to the City in support of Green’s custard shop and gathering place.

“As residents of a neighboring lot just two doors down, we believe that this custard stand would be a great addition to not just Main Street, but all of Collinsville.” — Bailey Lutz and Jeremey Martin

“... Uptown Scoops will be a much needed and appreciated addition to our Uptown entertainment and shopping district. … There are a lack of things to do and places for families and the youth of Collinsville to gather. This isn’t going to be another ‘saloon.’ This will be something different.” — Jason Rehg, Collinsville resident and business owner

“Being a business owner and resident of Uptown Collinsville, we are supportive and excited to welcome a new business to Main Street. Especially one that promotes a family friendly atmosphere.” Linda Allen, Allan & Ciuferi Funeral Home

“I want to share that the [Children’s Dyslexia] Center would welcome this business where our students and their families could enjoy custard and cookies.” — Brian Brown, Children’s Dyslexia Center - Southern Illinois

The city approved the plans for the project in mid-June. Construction started right after the city approved the plans, according to Green.

Green hopes to open the custard shop in August.

By fall, the fire pit and yard games areas should be ready. As for the playground, that will likely be ready in the spring.

Green said her vision is for the long term. The plan is for Uptown Scoops to operate March through December each year.

Uptown Scoops will be located at 403 W. Main St. in Collinsville. For updates, visit the Facebook page.
