A metro-east specialty bakery announces it will close at the end of the year. What we know
Update: This story has been updated to clarify the identity of the current owner.
A Belleville cake shop has announced that it will close at the end of the month.
Artistry on Cakes posted the announcement on its Facebook page Tuesday, stating that the business’ last day will be Friday, Dec. 30.
The post also stated that the decision to close weighed “heavy on our hearts for quite some time, but with the prolonged effects of the pandemic and our growing families we felt this was the best decision for us.”
“We deeply appreciate every single customer of ours and will miss you all so much!”
The specialty bakery currently has limited availability for customer orders the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Messages left with the business were not immediately returned.
Nancy Robinson opened Artistry on Cakes in 2008 at its current location at 507 Sherman St. in Belleville.
Prior to opening the shop, Robinson already had years of experience creating cakes of art for special occasions.
Her first decorated cake was a panda bear in a wagon for her son’s third birthday in 1974, according to a 2008 Belleville News-Democrat article.
She sold her first wedding cake in 2001.
Robinson worked as a decorating consultant and floral designer. She was working on silk flowers for a wedding when the cake baker backed out.
Robinson stepped up when the mother of the bride talked her into it, three weeks before the wedding.
She continued to create cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats for weddings, baby showers, birthdays and other special events.
Robinson retired in 2016, selling the business to the current owner, Kristen Hoff.
