Wendy’s announces it will close 140 locations by the end of 2024. Here’s what we know
Wendy’s announced Thursday that it will close 140 restaurants by the end of the year.
News of the closings came from the Ohio-based fast food chain during its Oct. 31 earnings call.
Wendy’s President and CEO Kirk Tanner said after a review of individual restaurants for performance and sales expectations, he “made the strategic decision to close additional restaurants this year that are outdated and located in underperforming trade areas.”
Over time, the closed restaurants will be “replaced by new restaurants at better locations with significantly improved sales and profitability,” he said.
Tanner anticipates that 2024 closures will be offset by new location openings this year.
The company is currently on track to open 250 to 300 new restaurants globally this year, opening 64 of those restaurants during the third quarter.
Wendy’s has locations in Belleville, Swansea, Fairview Heights, Collinsville and Edwardsville.
A list of closing locations was not provided, so it is not yet known if any area Wendy’s restaurant will be affected. Updates will be reported as new information becomes available.
Denny’s recently made a similar announcement that by the end of 2024, 50 locations will close with another 100 closing in 2025.
