Denny’s adds surcharge for eggs. What does that mean for its metro-east restaurants?

As egg prices continue to rise during the shortage caused by the avian influenza outbreak, Denny’s Inc. announced this week that some locations may implement a temporary surcharge for meals that include eggs.

“This pricing decision is market-by-market, and restaurant-by-restaurant due to the regional impacts of the egg shortage,” a Denny’s spokesperson wrote in an email to the BND.

Calls to metro-east Denny’s restaurants regarding the surcharge yielded some good news for area residents fond of breakfast foods.

Locations in Belleville, O’Fallon, Collinsville and Glen Carbon are not including the surcharge at this time. That could change as prices continue to fluctuate during the shortage, they say.

Messages left at the Pontoon Beach and Waterloo locations were not immediately returned.

Area Denny’s restaurants:

  • Belleville, 1130 S. Illinois St., 618-277-1360;

  • O’Fallon, 737 W. Highway 50, 618-622-0471;

  • Collinsville, 522 Ramada Blvd., 618-345-8995;

  • Glen Carbon, 27 Junction Drive, 618-659-1922;

  • Pontoon Beach, 1310 E. Chain of Rocks Road, 618-797-1684;

  • Waterloo, 959 IL-3, 618-939-1700.

Denny’s isn’t the first chain to implement such a charge. Earlier this month, Waffle House announced that a temporary 50-cent per egg surcharge would be in place during the shortage.

Waffle House will monitor egg prices and “adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow,” according to a Feb. 4 CNN report.
