Mashed crowns ‘hands down best’ fish sandwich in IL. Where to grab one in metro-east
Let’s say the Lenten season left you in a fishy mood. A popular food site has decreed “The Hands Down Best” fish sandwiches in each state.
In Illinois, that sandwich is served by Brown Bag Seafood Co., a chain. The publication, Mashed, wrote it determined which was the best by “scouring the internet for reviews.” Brown Bag has consistently good reviews on Google.
The publication noted the chain’s offerings were “quick and fresh.” On the menu currently are the $16.75 blackened fish sandwich, topped with lettuce, pickles and tartar sauce, and the $17.25 ginger chili crisp salmon sandwich, a seasonal special. The latter is topped with ginger slaw, crispy shallots, pickled cucumbers and chili crisp.
True to its name, Brown Bag Seafood Co. serves mostly on fish and shrimp, though there are two chicken options on the menu and several varieties of tater tots.
The chain has eight locations in and around Chicago, plus four more in the Southeast. Mashed wrote it is “acclaimed for a quick and fresh seafood lunch or dinner.”

That includes one served at Charlie’s Place and Fletcher’s Kitchen and Tap in Belleville, along with Otts Tavern & Millstadt Fish Stand.
Mashed’s Missouri pick for best fish sandwich is located in St. Louis at Yellowbelly.
