Remembering John Herzog

John Herzog, Madison County’s economic and community development coordinator, died Sept. 8, 2016. Colleagues, friends and family are invited to brief ceremony to honor Herzog at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at the Bill Tite Lions Memorial Park, East Alton. Following the event, attendees are invited to Franchise Bar and Grill, 601 E. Edwardsville Road, to continue sharing about Herzog’s life.

East Alton Mayor Joe Silkwood, a close colleague of Herzog’s, said in a press release, “It is an honor for the Village of East Alton to be the initial site of a permanent memorial to John. He contributed heavily to Madison County’s economic and community development success.”

New American Legion national vice commander is from Illinois

William “Bill” Flanagan, of the American Legion Poelker Post 321, New Baden, was elected national vice commander of the American Legion during its recent national convention in Reno, Nevada. Flanagan, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former commander of the Illinois American Legion, is one of 12 national officers.

Habitat for Humanity accepting applications

The O’Fallon Habitat for Humanity is seeking an O’Fallon area family for its spring 2018 home building program. To apply, families must attend a one-hour orientation session at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14, Sept. 20 or Sept. 27 at the O’Fallon Public Safety Building, 285 N. Seven Hills Road, O’Fallon. The 45th class reunion of Belleville Township High School East class of 1972 will be from 6-11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Cutter’s, 239 Carlyle Ave, Belleville. There will be a $10 charge at the door.

6th Annual Sept. 11th Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois 5K

The September 11th Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois 5K run or walk will take place at 9:11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 at Hough Park and Franklin Elementary on the corner of North 3rd and West C Streets in Belleville. Registration costs $20 prior to race day and $25 on race day. All proceeds from this event benefit the September 11th Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois. Medical Reserve Corps Volunteer Orientation Training

The Madison County Health Department will have a Medical Reserve Corps Volunteer Orientation Training event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at 101 E. Edwardsville Road, Wood River. Volunteers require no medical experience. This course will teach participants about public health emergency response, incident command system, strategic national stockpile, points of dispensing, and personal and family preparedness.
