Learn more about native studies at SIUE this weekend
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invites the public to its Native Studies Cultural Series programs that will be on campus and at Cahokia Mounds.
Grammy Award winning singer and composer, Joanne Shenandoah, of the Oneida Iroquois, will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 at SIUE’s Center for Spirituality and Sustainability, Edwardsville. Tickets are $28 for adults, $26 for SIUE staff, alumni and seniors, and $15 for students of any school. Tickets can be purchased online, artsandissues.com or by phone, 866-698-4253.
In addition to the concert, Shenandoah will have “Healing and Sound: A Workshop with Joanne Shenandoah (Oneida)” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at SIUE’s Center for Spirituality and Sustainability, Edwardsville. The cost is $20 at the door.
Award-winning journalist and author, Doug George-Kanentiio, of the Mohawk Iroquois, will present “Aboriginal Law and Justice” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at SIUE’s Center for Spirituality and Sustainability, Edwardsville. There is no entry fee.
Representatives of the Iroquois/Six Nations-Haudenosaunee will have a “Columbus Day Observation” presentation at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Cahokia Mounds Interpretive Center. There is no charge for this event.
East St. Louis class of 1957 reunion
The East St. Louis Senior High class of January and June 1957 will have its 60th class reunion activities Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14. A mixer will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at the 4204 Main Street Brewing Co., 4204 W. Main St., Belleville. A cocktail party and dinner will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville. The cost for the dinner is $30 per person. Wellness Exercise Classes
Celebrate Breast Health Awareness month by trying Wellness Exercise Classes at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Cancer Treatment Center, 4000 N. Illinois Lane, Ste. B, Swansea. The classes, led by trained instructors, will include yoga, seated yoga, tai chi and body movement. Halloween Trivia Night
A Halloween trivia night benefiting the Interfaith Community Food Pantry will be at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Trinity United Church of Christ, 47 N. Douglas Ave., Belleville. The cost in advance is $5 per person with two food items. The cost at the door is $10 per person and children under 12 years, $5. Food donations are welcomed. This event will feature attendance prizes, a basket raffle and 50/50. A costume contest for kids and adults will take place — no full face masks will be permitted.
