Saint Louis Astronomical Society: ‘First Images of a Supermassive Black Hole’ — 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18. Online via Zoom. Dr. Kazu Akiyama, a research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Haystack Observatory in Massachusetts, will share his research interest involving the extreme environment in the vicinity of black holes. Belleville Public School District #118 Kindergarten Registration — By appointment Tuesday, Feb. 22, through Friday, Feb. 25. Registration will include children who will be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1 and who reside within the school district. Parents are requested to bring the certified copy of their child’s birth certificate and three proofs of residence. Physical and immunization forms will be distributed at this time. Parents may register their children by calling the school to make an appointment from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Each elementary school will conduct a night registration in conjunction with the March or April PTA meetings. Webster University Film Series: Shawnee Showdown – Keep the Forest Standing — 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18. Winifred Moore Auditorium, 470 E. Lockwood Ave., St. Louis. During the late 0980s and the 1990s, a small dedicated group of activists fought on the ground and in the courts to stop clearcutting, oil and gas drilling and ATV use in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois.
