Saint Louis Astronomical Society: ‘The Steps of Making a Mirror or Why I Do It the Way I Do It’ — 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 18. Online via Zoom. Mirror making of the 21st Century has advanced to the point that mirrors are larger but more compact than ever before. To accomplish this, modern professional mirror makers are using state-of-the-art techniques and equipment to shape the concave surface of the mirrors. Michael Lockwood of Lockwood Custom Optics will discuss some of the equipment and techniques he uses to make some of the best telescope mirrors ever produced for the amateur and professional astronomer. River-to-River Trail Society Hike: Thacker Hollow, Gallatin County — 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19. Meet at the green pole barn one-quarter mile east of Double M Campground, 5320 Thacker Hollow Road, Junction. Hike led by Sam Morales. This will be a hike of about four hours and five and one half miles. This hike is free and open to the public. Hikes are intended for people in good health who have done some hiking in the past. Hiking sticks and boots or sturdy shoes are strongly recommended. All hikers should bring their own water and a snack. No dogs, please. 618-384-1321.
