▪ Carlyle Lake Christmas Tree Recycling/Fish Habitat Improvement Project — 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18. Allen Branch Boat Ramp, Eldon Hazlet State Park, Carlyle. Volunteers needed to assist with the annual spring Christmas tree recycling/fish habitat improvement project. The trees will be used to form fish reef structures in Carlyle Lake, which will provide breeding areas and protection for young fish. Some early pioneers of the Marine Settlement proposed a town, named Madison, with lots to be auctioned in 1820. Apparently, there were no buyers. In 1836, the village of Marine was platted by other people that followed. History books indicate that the Madison proposal was at the same location as the Village of Marine. ▪ River-to-River Trail Society Free Guided Hike: Dunntown Double Falls (Johnson County) — 10 a.m. Saturday, March 18. Goreville Village Park, 600 W. Main St., Goreville. Led by Bill Gilmour, 270-331-1553. These hikes are of at least moderate difficulty, and are intended for people in good health who have done some hiking. Boots or sturdy shoes and a walking stick are recommended for all hikes. Hikers should bring their own water and a snack. No dogs, please. Free and open to the public.
