It is hard to find a truly remote home in the metro-east, where the sounds of cars, trains and planes are a constant part of life. But an A-frame home in Belleville might be an exception.

The home at 2928 Rentchler Road in Belleville is located on the border of Belleville and Mascoutah and is surrounded by farms and woods. A steep, private driveway leads to the front door, which opens onto a fully wraparound deck.

Built into the side of a hill in 1966, the large deck offers excellent views of the 1.6 acres the house sits on. You can take in the scenery from inside as well—the entire rear of the house is made up of windows, allowing for an abundance of natural light.

This house isn’t a curiosity; it’s a place that has been genuinely lived in and cared for. The original owner finished the deck in 2021, waterproofed the basement in 2023, and remodeled all four bedrooms and three full bathrooms over time. A slop sink was added to the basement, and the large open floor plans on both levels make the home feel much larger than its actual 2,070 square feet.

“The only thing we didn’t completely redo was the kitchen,” said Cara Scheich, who lived in the home for eight years before deciding to sell.

Although the A-frame was built during the hippie era of the 1960s, contemporary features stand out. Modern appliances, newly remodeled floors and ceilings, and a finished basement are just a few of the updated touches you’ll find.

Some original details remain, with exposed brick and wooden beams providing a timeless look that fits the rural aesthetic without appearing too rustic. A wood-burning fireplace in the finished basement adds a tasteful sense of nostalgia that blends well with the earthy feeling of the woods outside.

The home is located in the Mascoutah School District, pays taxes to Belleville, and is less than half a mile from Julius J. Knobeloch Woods Nature Preserve.
