Adopt Cricket: A ‘royal’ Corgi who loves long walks and tasty treats

This week’s Pet of the Week is Highland Animal Shelter’s Cricket, an 8-year-old tricolor Corgi, that was rescued by animal control as a stray, lost from her original owners.

Mary Parker, director at the Highland Animal Shelter, believes Cricket was somebody’s lost pet, but no one came forward to claim her. After waiting the designated amount of time, the shelter has put her up for adoption.

Parker is, however, waiting for a local match despite her phone ringing nonstop from around the country. She explains that the calls come from various Corgi-enthusiasts and rescue programs, but wants the process to happen near Highland so she can assure Cricket gets to the best home possible.

“I want it to be a local adoption,” Parker said. “If something goes wrong with the (adoption) process, how will I get her back safely?”

Cricket is a natural walker and loves the outdoors. She has been known to have the trademark “butt-wiggle” as she gets her speed going. Parker recommends that anyone who is thinking about adopting Cricket should enjoy long walks so that the active Corgi can get plenty of exercise.

Cricket’s fondness for treats and her low-profile make her keen for finding any leftover goodies on the ground. Rest assured, she doesn’t leave a lot of mess when she knows there is something tasty around.

“I think she would probably do really great with someone who is retired,” Parker said. “Or somebody that spends more time at home with her, since she is older.”

Quiet and clean at the shelter, Parker is hopeful that Cricket won’t stay long in her search for a forever home. She thinks that Cricket would be the great companion to someone who can spend a lot of time with her, both indoors and out and “treat her like royalty.”

“Of course, these are the dogs that the Queen of England has,” Parker said.

Cricket is available for adoption at the Highland Animal Shelter at 510 W Monroe St. For more information, visit their website or call Mary Parker at 618-654-6067.
