Who is running for Scott, Muscatine, Clinton county offices?
There are just a few competitive primary races for county offices in Scott, Muscatine, and Clinton counties this June.
Early voting begins May 13 for party primaries on June 2.
In Scott County, Republican voters will winnow the field for Scott County supervisors from four candidates to three.
In Clinton and Muscatine counties, Republican voters there will each vote in a competitive primary for the county recorder's office.
Incumbents Jean Dickson and John Maxwell are running for reelection to the Scott County Board of Supervisors. Also running as Republicans are state lawmaker Luana Stoltenberg and Jennifer McAndrew Lane, a state department of corrections employee and wife to the Scott County Sheriff Tim Lane who also ran in 2022 and 2024.
Kevin Randle is the lone Democrat seeking a supervisor seat.
Also, Democratic incumbent Scott County Recorder Rita Vargas filed to run for reelection after previously telling the Quad-City Times she planned to retire at the end of her term.
Vargas said she initially planned to retire but decided to try for another four years in part because of her husband's health.
"I'm a little worried about what's going on in the world and how what's happening is going to affect social security and health care," Vargas said. "My husband has Parkinson's. I'm worried that things will change and will affect the care that he's getting."
She said both he and her brother, who also has Parkinson's, would be affected by her decision to retire.
Vargas said she wants to continue efforts to digitize more historical land records and military discharge records in the county recorder's office.
Vargas said she also wants the recorder's office to continue offering an open counter service, so Scott County residents can come in at any time to request assistance without an appointment. Vargas said she thinks it's more convenient for residents. The Scott County Treasurer's Office implemented an appointment-only system in recent years.
"We're open to the public, so we should be open," Vargas said. "A lot of people are driving by and saying oh, I forgot! …I want to keep our counter open where people can come in and we'll take care of them."
