Bettendorf unveils first public futsal court at Kiwanis Park

Bettendorf has opened its first-ever futsal court at Kiwanis Park, giving residents a free new space to play the fast-paced, small-sided version of soccer.

Futsal is a smaller version of soccer, typically played on a hard surface with dimensions similar to a basketball court. The court will be available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the city. The multi-purpose court will have basketball hoops, goals, lighting, and benches.

The cost to install the court was about $202,000, according to a news release, and the city raised $75,000 in private sponsorships.

"With the FIFA World Cup in full swing, there couldn't be a better time to open Bettendorf's first futsal court in our park system," Parks and Recreation Director John Byrnes said in a news release. "This multi-court system will be incredibly versatile as it allows kids and adults to play soccer and basketball all year round any time the surface is dry."

Byrnes said Kiwanis Park is the ideal home for the feature, with parking, restrooms, a shelter, and other amenities. Also, the playground at Kiwanis will soon undergo a renovation. Starting July 19, parkgoers can vote for their favorite concept plan at bettendorf.org/kickstartkiwanis

The city will hold a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. July 14 at Kiwanis Park, 4223 Greenbrier Dr. Bettendorf.
