Signage removed from the closed Ruler Foods store in Belleville. What could this mean?
On a recent errand run I drove past the Ruler Foods store at 1703 North Belt West in Belleville. You know, the one that’s been closed because of mine subsidence.
Well, I noticed that the signage was gone. And thinking I couldn’t be the only one to notice, I figured I was also not alone in wondering what that was all about. So I checked it out.
I spoke to Cliff Cross, Belleville’s economic development, planning and zoning director, who said Ruler is still trying to figure out how to move forward.
According to Cross, the signage was removed a couple of weeks ago. His assumption is that they’re reusing the signs at another store, adding that it’s a common practice for companies to reuse existing signs rather than fabricating brand new ones.
I also sent an email to Ruler Foods, asking for an update on the store. I haven’t heard back from them yet, but when I have some new info, I’ll be sure to pass it along.
About Ruler Foods Belleville
Ruler Foods at 1703 North Belt West in Belleville opened in November 2014. The store closed suddenly in September 2023.
At the time, social media posts initially stated the closure was due to a water main break. A sign on the grocery store’s door said it was closed “due to a safety issue,” according to a BND report.
It was determined soon after that the issue was mine subsidence.
A spokesperson for Ruler Foods sent the following statement to the BND in February 2024 in response to a request for an update:
“Our dedication to the Belleville community remains unwavering, and we are actively exploring all possible options to re-establish our presence in the area. In the interim, we invite our Belleville shoppers to visit any of our other eight locations throughout the Saint Louis Metro Area. We are dedicated to ensuring that our customers continue to receive the quality products and service they have come to expect from Ruler.”
