One Fairview Heights business closes after 22 years; two others opening soon
Sheridan’s Frozen Custard in Fairview Heights closed in early December after more than 22 years in business.
Dallas Alley, the city’s land use and development director, said the owners didn’t give the city any notice of the closing.
“It was kind of a shock to all of us,” he said.
Alley learned of the closing via an email sent by Sheridan’s to subscribers of its newsletter.
Owners Jim and Becky Biermann opened Sheridan’s in August 2003, according to a News-Democrat report.
The location at 5326 N. Illinois St. was the first Sheridan’s in Illinois and the St. Louis area. The Biermanns owned another location in Chesterfield, Missouri, which has since closed.
The 1,234-square-foot building was constructed in 1986 and originally operated as Dew’s Frozen Fantacy.
From there, Tom and DeDe Cordie opened a third White Cottage location that operated from 1990 to 1993. Baskin-Robbins took over from 1994 to 2001. The Cordies opened Cordie’s Creamery in 2002.
The Biermanns bought the property from the Cordies in June 2003.
The property is currently for sale.
Sheridan’s Frozen Custard was established in 1998 by Jim Sheridan with the opening of the first shop in Overland Park, Kansas.
Multiple franchise locations opened over the years in Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas and Washington. Two Sheridan’s shops remain open and are located in Topeka, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, according to the website.
A former Belleville sweets shop to reopen in new space
The Sweet Creamery, a shop that specializes in crêpes, ice cream and other decadent treats, is setting up shop at 4541 N. Illinois St. in Fairview Heights.
Alley said an opening date has not been set because the owners still have some work to do before passing final inspections.
The Sweet Creamery was originally located at 6500 W. Main St., Suite 337, in Belleville. It opened in March 2024, but by the end of the year, owner Ameena Almasri relocated operations to Pop’s Fish-Chicken-Gyro, another family business located nearby at 4421 W. Main St.
A second Sweet Creamery location previously operated on Kingshighway Boulevard in St. Louis. The location closed after sustaining tornado damage in May, according to a September article by Feast Magazine.
The Sweet Creamery’s Belleville shop officially closed in June when another location opened at 2801 Locust St. in St. Louis.
In September, the business announced that it was coming soon to Fairview Heights. An additional location is also planned for Ballwin, Missouri.
Updates regarding an opening and other details for the Fairview Heights shop will be reported as more info becomes available.
