SK Group chief meets TSMC CEO to discuss advanced memory cooperation

SEOUL, June 4 (UPI) -- South Korea's SK Group said Thursday that its chairman, Chey Tae-won, met with TSMC CEO C.C. Wei to discuss the latest trends in next-generation artificial intelligence technologies.

In their first face-to-face meeting since June 2024, Seoul-based SK Group noted the two agreed to expand collaboration in advanced high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, development and semiconductor packaging.

SK Group's major affiliate, SK hynix, is one of the world's leading HBM suppliers, along with domestic rival Samsung Electronics. TSMC is the global leader in contract chip manufacturing.

SK Group said that the two firms would accelerate efforts to strengthen their position in the emerging custom AI memory market, targeting the mounting demands of global technology giants.

"Amid growing supply bottlenecks across the global AI value chain, the pairing of SK hynix's world-leading AI memory technology with TSMC's foundry capabilities is expected to offer a practical and scalable solution," the group said in a statement.

"Through its partnership with TSMC, SK hynix aims to deliver high-performance products at the right time and solidify its leadership position in the AI era," it added.

Earlier this week, Chey met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in Taiwan on the sidelines of Computex 2026. They are scheduled to meet again in Seoul on Friday with Hyundai Motor Group head Chung Eui-sun and LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo.

The share price of SK hynix fell 2.63% on the Seoul bourse on Thursday. The broader KOSPI declined 1.84%.
