Illinois state government hiring for 38 metro-east jobs. What do they pay?

The Illinois state government is hiring for at least 38 jobs in the metro-east and southern Illinois, including one that pays up to $139,764 per year.

Unemployment in Illinois held steady at 5.1% in May, according to the latest available preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s unemployment rate was slightly higher than the national figure of 4.3%.

From engineering to positions in life sciences, there are a variety of listings available from the state. Here’s what to know about five Illinois state government positions available in the metro-east.

Operations manager

Agency: Department of Human Services

Wage: $121,524 to $139,764 per year

Location: Alton

Application deadline: Tuesday, July 7

Minimum qualifications for this position include “knowledge, skill and mental development” equivalent to completion of four years of college and three years of progressively responsible administrative management experience overseeing operations and staffing for a public or private organization, according to the job listing. Preferred qualifications apply, too.

Job responsibilities include, the listing says:

  • “Serves as the Operations Manager for the Alton Mental Health Center Staffing and Control Units.
  • Serves as full-line supervisor.
  • In collaboration with the Labor Relations Specialist and Human Resources Director of the facility, manages the pre-disciplinary process for the Nursing division.
  • Serves as the hearing officer for level 1 grievances for the nursing division.
  • Participates in a variety of hospital meetings.
  • Evaluates services by conducting ongoing audits (e.g., performance improvement) of services provided in adherence to established goals and standards.”

Minimum qualifications for this position include a master’s degree in orientation and mobility from an accredited college or university, certification as an orientation and mobility specialist (COMS) and one year of professional experience in orientation and mobility, which could be from completion of an agency-sponsored training program, the listing says. Job responsibilities include, according to the listing:

  • “Serves as Orientation and Mobility Instructor providing orientation and mobility instruction in an assigned geographical area in the Bureau of Customer and Community Blind Services.
  • Manages caseload of customers who are Blind, Visually Impaired, or DeafBlind.
  • Establishes and nurtures effective working relationships with customers.
  • Participates in staff meetings and assists with training for trainee staff.”

Wage: $4,747 monthly anticipated starting pay, full range goes up to $6,446 per month

Minimum qualifications for this position include a bachelor’s degree in some field of the life sciences and the ability to communicate verbally and written in Spanish at a colloquial level with Spanish-speaking clients, the listing says. Preferred qualifications also apply.

The listing’s job responsibilities include:

  • “Receives training for a period of six to twelve months duration to gain knowledge in and assist in conducting routine field inspections/investigations of hazardous and solid waste management and disposal facilities and remediation sites for the Field Operations Section (FOS), Bureau of Land (BOL), Southern Region/Marion.

Minimum qualifications for this position include completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum plus 30 months of engineering experience; or six years of engineering experience, according to the listing.   • “Serves as Regional Call Center Administrator in the Division of Family & Community Services (FCS), Department of Human Services (DHS).
  • Serves as full-line supervisor.
  • Reviews and evaluates reports of casework activities including error reports, audit findings and quality assurance reviews.
  • Interprets, explains and implements new policies and procedures or changes in existing policies and procedures.
  • Travels to establish and maintain effective public relations with employers and other interested parties in the local area served.”
