St. Clair County announces two more coronavirus deaths, bringing regional total to 11

A total of 11 people have died of coronavirus in southwestern Illinois with the announcement Thursday that two more COVID-19 patients succumbed to the respiratory disease.

The deaths occurred in St. Clair County, county health department spokesperson Samantha Bierman said in a live streamed briefing with the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency.

The patients were a man in his 60s with an unknown medical history and a man in his 90s with underlying health conditions.

The previous deaths in the region have occurred in St. Clair County, which now has eight; Madison County, which now has two deaths; and Monroe County, which has reported one death.

The region has confirmed a total of 335 total positive cases.

On Monday, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced it would begin releasing ZIP codes where there are five or more positive cases.

Statewide, 528 people with COVID-19 have died and 16,422 positive cases have been reported as of Thursday afternoon by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The department announced 66 new deaths and 1,344 new positive cases on Thursday. There have been 80,857 coronavirus tests conducted across the state.
