Three more deaths in Monroe, St. Clair counties bring local total to 18
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in southwestern Illinois reached 491 on Tuesday, while the number of deaths increased to 18.
Two residents who were associated with an outbreak of COVID-19 at Garden Place assisted living facility for seniors in Columbia died as a result of complications from the virus, Monroe County Heath Department Director John Wagner said Tuesday. He said one of the two persons had tested positive for coronavirus but lab results are expected to be released Wednesday on whether the other person’s death was caused by the respiratory disease.
On Monday, Wagner reported that two other residents of Garden Place had died, bringing the total number of deaths related to the cluster there at four.
Wagner said 22 of the 47 coronavirus cases in Monroe County are related to Garden Place. This includes 17 residents and five employees. Also, he said there are three other employees who are from other counties and they were not included in the Monroe County statistics.
Garden Place has 66 residents, said spokesperson Amira Fahoum, of its parent company Compass Senior Living.
Meanwhile, St. Clair County announced one additional coronavirus death Tuesday as well. The patient was a female in her 80s who had underlying health conditions.
In a live stream with the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency, Swansea Police Chief Steve Johnson said an officer on his force had tested positive for COVID-19 after responding to a disturbance call and coming into contact with a coronavirus-positive patient. The officer is recovering and no one else in the department was infected, Johnson said.
The previous reported deaths in the region have occurred in St. Clair County, which now has 11; Madison County, two; and Monroe County, now has five.
