Another coronavirus death in Madison County as cases in southwest Illinois top 800

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in southwestern Illinois has reached 835, while the number of deaths has increased to 42.

On Thursday, Madison County health officials announced one more person had died after testing positive for the virus, a man in his 80s. The county’s death toll since the pandemic started is now 14.

Previous deaths have also been reported in St. Clair County, which has 19, and Monroe County, which has eight. Total new cases from Thursday in southwestern Illinois as of this afternoon was 50, with the one death.

Statewide, 1,688 people with COVID-19 have died. A total of 36,934 cases had been reported as of Wednesday afternoon by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
