Coronavirus cases in southwestern Illinois eclipse 1,500, death toll rises above 100

The number of coronavirus cases in southwestern Illinois continued to increase Wednesday, as did the number of virus-related deaths.

St. Clair County announced the deaths of two patients who had tested positive for coronavirus Wednesday: A man in his 50s with underlying conditions and a man in his 70s with underlying conditions. Clinton County reported two new deaths, with no specific information provided.

Madison County health officials reported a new death Wednesday as well — a woman in her 80s. It is unknown if she had underlying conditions.

The region has had 1,516 cases and 105 deaths since the pandemic began. On Wednesday, 64 new cases and five new deaths were announced in the region.

During his daily COVID-19 news conference Wednesday, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced 2,270 new cases statewide, bringing the total number to 68,232. Officials also announced 136 new deaths for a total of 2,974 since the pandemic began.
