Southwestern Illinois coronavirus cases approach 1,600, death toll rises to 109
The number of coronavirus cases in southwestern Illinois continued to increase Thursday, as did the number of virus-related deaths.
St. Clair County announced the deaths of two patients who had tested positive for coronavirus Thursday: Both males in their 80s with underlying conditions. The county also announced 46 new cases Thursday.
Madison County health officials reported two new deaths Thursday as well — a man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s. It is unknown if they had underlying conditions.
The region has had 1,587 cases and 109 deaths since the pandemic began. On Thursday alone, as of the afternoon, 68 new cases and four new deaths were announced.
During his daily COVID-19 news conference Thursday, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced 2,641 new cases statewide, bringing the total number to 70,873. Officials also announced 138 new deaths for a total of 3,111 since the pandemic began.
