Illinois surpasses 20k coronavirus tests in one day, Governor J.B. Pritzker says

Illinois exceeded 20,000 coronavirus tests in a 24-hour period for the first time since the pandemic started, Gov. J.B. Pritkzer said Friday.

Of the 20,671 tests conducted in the day before the governor’s conference, 14% came back positive for COVID-19, the lowest recorded since March, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. The state has succeeded in increasing the numbers of tests conducted on a daily basis for weeks in a row.

The number of public testing sites has also increased statewide from 112 on April 24 to 177 as of April 30, the governor said.

To move from phase two to three in the governor’s reopening plan, a region would have to see a positivity rate below 20% with no more than a 10 percentage point increase for 14 days in a row and meet other metrics. A region also would have to see no overall increase in hospital admissions for COVID-19-like illness for 28 days and at least 14% of intensive care unit beds, medical and surgical beds, and ventilators available.

Phase three is marked by the reopening of retail stores, offices, salons, barbershops and other businesses with capacity limits and other precautions.

Statewide, 399,714 individuals have been tested for coronavirus since the pandemic began.

Public health officials announced 2,887 new cases of coronavirus disease in Illinois and 130 additional deaths for a total of 73,760 cases and 3,241 deaths.
