Madison County has its highest single-day coronavirus death toll since start of pandemic

A total of 2,166 people in southwestern Illinois have tested positive for COVID-19 and 159 people have died, health officials reported Friday.

Madison County reported five new deaths — one male in his 70s, one male in his 90s and three females in their 90s. It is unknown if they had underlying health conditions. This was the county’s highest single-day coronavirus death toll since start of pandemic. Additionally, St. Clair County announced one new death Friday, a woman in her 80s. It is unknown if she had underlying health conditions.

Overall, 45 new cases and six new deaths were reported in the region Friday.

Also on Friday, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced 2,758 more people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 108 more people have died statewide. Illinois has seen a total of 4,715 deaths across the state during the pandemic and a total of 105,444 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus.

Additionally, the latest IDPH metrics showed that Southern Illinois is on track to start Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan at the end of the current stay-at-home order May 30.
