St. Clair County reports its highest daily coronavirus-related death toll since April
Local health departments are reporting that the number of coronavirus cases in southwestern Illinois has reached 2,362 as of Wednesday, and the number of deaths has increased to 182.
St. Clair County saw its deadliest day since April 30, reporting six new virus-related deaths Wednesday — a man in his 60s, a man in his 70s and a man in his 80s and three women in their 90s, all with underlying health conditions.
Madison County, meanwhile, reported one new death — a male in his 70s. No additional information was provided. Randolph County also reported a new death — a female in her 80s. No additional information was provided.
Overall, Wednesday saw 30 new cases and eight new deaths in the region.
Previously, the Illinois Department of Public Health has said it has been reporting lower numbers of coronavirus cases and deaths on the weekend because of a multitude of factors.
In an email to the BND, the state said those factors include fewer specimens collected, delays in lab testing and reporting and delayed data entry by those reporting the data, like labs, hospitals, health departments and coroners.
With Monday being Memorial Day, it’s not surprising to see a spike in deaths such as what occurred Wednesday in St. Clair County, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Brenda Fedak, the organizational communications manager for the St. Clair County Health Department, confirmed the reasons the state noted regarding the uptick in deaths the county saw Wednesday. She said the county health department reports its stats daily and does not withhold any data.
Statewide, Illinois passed 5,000 coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic. The IDPH’s Wednesday update on coronavirus included 160 new deaths statewide and 1,111 new positive cases, bringing the totals to 5,083 killed by the virus and 114,306 infected.
Overall, 803,973 people in Illinois have been tested for the virus.
Additionally, the latest IDPH metrics showed that Southern Illinois is on track to start Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan at the end of the current stay-at-home order on May 29.
