Southwest Illinois eclipses 200 COVID-19 related deaths, as total cases reaches 2,641

Local health departments reported Wednesday the number of coronavirus cases in southwestern Illinois has reached 2,641, and the number of deaths has increased to 204.

Madison County officials reported three new deaths — two men in their 60s and one man in his 90s. It is unknown if they had any underlying health conditions.

St. Clair County officials announced the deaths of a man in his 20s with no known health conditions and a woman in her 90s with underlying health conditions. This brings the COVID-19-related death toll in St. Clair County to 101. St. Clair also currently has 74 total hospitalizations, the highest in the county since April 16. There have been 16 new hospitalizations in St. Clair County the last 24 hours.

Overall, 43 new cases and five new deaths were reported in the region Wednesday.

Statewide, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Wednesday that 982 additional people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 96 people died in the previous 24 hours.

Illinois has seen a total of 5,621 deaths during the pandemic, officials reported. A total of 123,830 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, while 959,175 people have been tested for COVID-19.
