24 more people possibly infected by coronavirus at St. Clair County long-term care centers
The St. Clair County Health Department on Tuesday announced an additional 24 people connected to residential facilities may have been infected by the coronavirus, and two more people have died.
County officials said the increase in new diagnoses across St. Clair County, 42 since Monday, was because of an increase in coronavirus testing. But it is not clear if the numbers out of long-term care centers also increased because of testing.
The health department includes both residents and staff with positive test results and those who have symptoms of the respiratory disease in its data on coronavirus outbreaks at long-term care centers. St. Clair County is working to ramp up testing at the facilities.
A representative from the health department could not immediately be reached for comment about the reason for the increase.
A total of 407 people who live in or work at long-term care centers in the county have now either been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have symptoms. Sixty of them have died, accounting for 61% of the 98 coronavirus deaths countywide.
Health officials reported the first death out of Cedar Ridge of Lebanon on Tuesday. Another person from Four Fountains in Belleville has also died, bringing the total deaths there to 24.
