144 deaths from coronavirus outbreaks at southwestern Illinois long-term care centers

As of Friday, 144 people connected to southwestern Illinois long-term care centers had died from illness related to the coronavirus.

The St. Clair County Health Department and Illinois Department of Public Health each released information Friday on the number of people affected by coronavirus outbreaks at those facilities.

St. Clair County provides provides daily updates, but the state’s data is only updated on Fridays, when the full picture of the coronavirus’ effect on long-term care centers in the region is available.

In a week’s time, the agencies recorded 14 more deaths. The total Friday, 144, was up from 130 on May 29.

The state added three new locations where the coronavirus has spread: Highland Care Center, Cedarhurst Senior Living in Waterloo and Cedarhurst of Godfrey. A total of 34 facilities across southwestern Illinois have now reported outbreaks. Of those, 15 facilities have also reported deaths.

All but one of Clinton County’s coronavirus deaths, or 94%, were people connected to long-term care centers, including at least one nurse. Most of Madison County’s deaths, about 85%, were also from residential facilities.

St. Clair County has reported five additional deaths from long-term care centers since Friday. About 61% of the people who died in St. Clair County were from nursing homes or group homes.
