161 deaths from coronavirus outbreaks at southwestern Illinois long-term care centers
At least 161 people connected to southwestern Illinois long-term care centers have died from illness related to the coronavirus to date.
The St. Clair County Health Department and Illinois Department of Public Health each released information Friday on the number of people affected by coronavirus outbreaks at those facilities.
St. Clair County provides daily updates, but the state’s data is only updated on Fridays, when a more complete picture of the coronavirus’ effect on long-term care centers in the region becomes available.
Based on the state’s update, all of the coronavirus deaths in Clinton County have been people who live in or work at a long-term care center.
No new deaths were reported out of long-term care centers in Madison County since the previous week. Deaths from those facilities still account for 85% of Madison County’s total coronavirus deaths.
In St. Clair County, 63% of deaths from the virus are people connected to long-term care centers.
In a week’s time, the state and St. Clair County Health Department recorded 16 more deaths. The total Friday, 161, was up from 145 on June 5. The Belleville News-Democrat has updated the total from June 5 to reflect an additional death from BRIA of Cahokia that was not reported by the St. Clair County Health Department until this week.
The death from BRIA of Cahokia was first recorded in the state’s data May 15. The health department’s daily report only started catching up on Thursday.
BRIA of Cahokia is in the East Side Health District rather than the St. Clair County Health Department’s jurisdiction. So while the health department has said in county briefings that it calls each long-term care center daily for updates, that did not include BRIA of Cahokia, health officials recently confirmed.
Instead, BRIA of Cahokia reports its numbers to East Side, which covers Canteen Township, Centreville Township, East St. Louis Township and Stites Township.
The St. Clair County Health Department has started updating numbers for BRIA of Cahokia based on the state’s data, which is submitted by the East Side Health District.
On Friday, the state’s update included two new locations where the coronavirus has spread: University Care Center in Madison County and Villa Catherine in Clinton County. A total of 37 long-term care centers across southwestern Illinois have now reported outbreaks. Of those, 16 facilities have also reported deaths.

Both state and local agencies say they include residents and employees of the facilities in their data on outbreaks.
The St. Clair County Health Department provides daily updates on the coronavirus outbreaks and other developments in the county during 3:30 p.m. live streams by the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency on Facebook. The state’s updates on outbreaks come once a week at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/long-term-care-facility-outbreaks-covid-19.
The website medicare.gov records the number of beds for Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes.
Data discrepancy
The Illinois Department of Public Health recorded two more deaths out of Lebanon Care Center on its website than the St. Clair County Health Department reported Friday.
The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear Friday evening when the website updated; the health department could not be reached for comment.
Because local health departments and individual facilities have previously said the state’s data was off, the BND did not include the higher number for Lebanon Care Center in calculating the total deaths for the region.
When the state first released data on April 19, for example, it recorded 54 coronavirus cases at Memorial Care Center in Belleville, while the center itself said there were 13 at the time. And 54 is still a higher number than Memorial Care Center is reporting today.
