168 deaths from coronavirus outbreaks at southwestern Illinois long-term care centers

At least 168 people connected to southwestern Illinois long-term care centers have died from illness related to the coronavirus to date.

The St. Clair County Health Department and Illinois Department of Public Health each provided updates Friday on the number of people affected by coronavirus outbreaks at those facilities since the pandemic began.

St. Clair County provides daily updates, but the state’s data is only updated on Fridays, when a more complete picture of the coronavirus’ effect on long-term care centers in the region becomes available.

In a week’s time, the state and St. Clair County Health Department recorded seven more deaths. The total Friday, 168, was up from 161 on June 12.

A total of 38 long-term care centers across southwestern Illinois have reported outbreaks. Of those, 16 facilities have also reported deaths.

The state’s updates on outbreaks come once a week at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/long-term-care-facility-outbreaks-covid-19.

The website medicare.gov records the number of beds for Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes.

Data discrepancies

The St. Clair County Health Department’s data did not match the state’s for two long-term care centers on Friday.

The Department of Public Health said there have been 13 deaths from the outbreak at Lebanon Care Center, while the health department said there have been 10.

The state also reported one more coronavirus case at Knollwood Retirement Center in Caseyville than the health department did.

The reason for the discrepancies was not clear Friday. The St. Clair County Health Department did not immediately respond to a Belleville News-Democrat inquiry.
