Monday live coronavirus updates: COVID-19 cases surge in rural Missouri over weekend

Missouri sees two record-setting days of COVID-19 spikes in rural areas

Sunday marked a record for Missouri as the state reported a record spike in COVID-19 cases from rural areas in the state.

Missouri recorded 413 new cases of the virus Sunday, breaking a record-setting 389 new cases the day before. As of Monday morning, Missouri now has 18,003 confirmed cases and roughly 955 people have died, according to the state’s health department.

The department reported a majority of the cases came from rural southwestern parts of the states. The counties with the highest spikes are McDonald, Jasper, Barry, Laclede, Stone, Taney, Butler, Cooper and Barton.

Mcdonald County alone saw 196 new cases on Saturday, roughly half of Sunday’s total.

Illinois lays out rules for Restore Illinois’ Phase 4

Illinois moves into Phase 4 of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s five-phased reopening plan Friday, bringing much anticipated changes to coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

Gatherings of up to 50 will be allowed in Phase 4. Under Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan, which went into effect May 29, groups of more than 10 were banned.

All regions in Illinois were set to move into the new phase as of Monday morning.

American Red Cross to offer COVID-19 antibody tests with blood donation

The American Red Cross, for a limited time, is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donors for COVID-19 antibodies at no cost.

U.S. Congressman John Shimkus, R-Illinois, urged constituents, specifically in Effingham, Monday to donate and get tested to help the growing need of antibodies nationwide.

“With many previously scheduled blood drives cancelled due to the pandemic, the Red Cross continues to face a shortage of blood,” Shimkus said. “Donating blood is a safe process and people should not hesitate to give or receive blood.”

Potential donors can use the Red Cross Blood Donor mobile app to schedule an appointment, or call 1-800-733-2767. The app is available from the Apple or Google Play app stores.
