Southwestern Illinois counties report 96 new cases of coronavirus over the weekend

Health officials in Southwestern Illinois reported no new coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday and Sunday, making it only the second weekend without any new reported deaths since the pandemic began.

The other weekend without reported deaths was July 4-5.

St. Clair County now has 2,492 cases of coronavirus and 144 deaths, leading the metro-east in both statistics.

Madison County is the second-highest county with 1,192 cases and 70 deaths. The majority of cases in the metro-east have come from those two counties.

Overall, a total of 96 new COVID-19 cases but no new additional coronavirus-related death were announced in the southwestern Illinois region over the weekend.

Illinois has seen a total of 7,187 deaths during the pandemic as of Sunday, officials reported. A total of 153,916 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, while more than 1.9 million people have been tested for COVID-19.

As of Sunday, all regions in Illinois except the central and the north-central region were still meeting all of the state’s metrics for remaining in Phase 4 of the reopening plan. The central region and the north-central region were both falling short on one of the metrics, growth in hospital admissions over the previous 28 days.

Here are the latest available statistics for southwestern Illinois counties. The number in parenthesis reflects how the new daily total compares to the prior day total. Subtractions occur when a COVID-19 positive patient is misdiagnosed or moves away from the area.
