51 new coronavirus cases, 2 deaths at southwestern Illinois care centers in past week

In a week’s time, long-term care centers in southwestern Illinois reported 51 new coronavirus cases and two additional deaths.

The Illinois Department of Public Health provides an update on the locations affected by coronavirus outbreaks each Friday, when a more complete picture of the virus’ effect on long-term care centers in the region becomes available.

The St. Clair County Health Department releases information about outbreaks more regularly.

Long-term care residents are among the most vulnerable to severe illness or death from the coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 respiratory disease.

Since July 10, two people have died, one each from Swansea Rehab and Care Center and Riverside Rehab and Healthcare in Alton.

New cases were reported out of 12 locations in the past week:

  • Beverly Farm in Godfrey — 16 cases
  • BRIA of Cahokia — Five cases
  • St. Paul’s Home in Belleville — Four cases
  • Caritas Family Solutions in Belleville region — Three cases
  • Integrity Healthcare in Belleville — Three cases
  • Meridian Village in Glen Carbon — Three cases
  • Mercy Rehab and Care Center in Swansea — Two cases
  • Caseyville Nursing and Rehab — Two cases
  • Villas of Holly Brook in Bethalto — Two cases
  • Cedar Ridge of Lebanon — One case
  • Clinton Manor Living Facility in New Baden — One case
  • Cedarhurst of Godfrey — One case

Plus three new locations are reporting their first cases: the St. John Bosco Children’s Center in Belleville, Elmwood Nursing and Rehab in Maryville and Bradford Place in Swansea, according to state and local reports.

Each of the new locations had between two and four cases of the coronavirus. Two is the minimum amount to be considered an outbreak, according to health officials.

State and local health officials have now recorded a total of 1,181 cases and 182 deaths from long-term care centers across St. Clair, Madison, Clinton, Monroe, Macoupin, Randolph and Bond counties since the coronavirus pandemic began. St. Clair County also counts presumptive positives, or people who have symptoms of COVID-19 without a positive test result.

Here is the latest information from the St. Clair County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health on the total number of people who have been infected with the coronavirus at each facility:

Both state and local agencies say they include residents and employees of the facilities in their numbers.

The St. Clair County Health Department provides updates on the outbreaks and other developments in the county on the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency’s Facebook page. The state’s updates on outbreaks come once a week at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/long-term-care-facility-outbreaks-covid-19.

The website medicare.gov records the number of beds for Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes.

Discrepancies

The Illinois Department of Public Health’s information did not match the St. Clair County Health Department’s for several long-term care centers on Friday.

The Department of Public Health said there were more deaths out of five locations.

The Belleville News-Democrat has not included higher numbers announced by the state in calculating the total deaths for the region.

The state relies on local health departments for the information it reports and says on its website that the local agencies will have “the most up-to-date data.”

Health departments and individual facilities in the metro-east have previously said the state’s data was off.
