Local health officials reported 132 new coronavirus cases Monday, with St. Clair County accounting for 57 cases and an additional death.

A woman in her 90s with unknown underlying health conditions died of complications from COVID-19.

Bond County reported its second death late Sunday. No details about the person’s age, gender or possible underlying health conditions were immediately available.

The metro-east region, which includes St. Clair, Madison, Bond, Clinton, Washington, Randolph and Monroe counties, saw 7.3% of test results coming back positive, or the positivity rate, as of June 24. That’s a 0.4% increase from the day prior. An 8% positivity rate for three consecutive days could automatically trigger restrictions on businesses.

“A lot of the resurgence comes from careless behavior,” said Chairman Mark Kern.

Half of the cases in St. Clair County are under the age of 40, Kern said. Younger residents might believe they are immune to the virus, but he said they are not and that an unmitigated spread could result in business restrictions.

St. Louis County officials on Monday announced restrictions on businesses, including a 10 p.m. closing time for bars, said St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency director Herb Simmons.

Simmons said it would be possible for St. Clair County to impose similar restrictions if the positivity rate continues to increase.

Kern also urged residents to look for their applications to vote by mail in the November election. Registered voters should receive them in the mail.

“The safest way to operate is to be able to vote by mail,” Kern said.

Madison County reported 48 new positive cases with double-digit increases in zip codes that include Granite City, Godfrey and Pontoon Beach. The average percentage of tests coming back positive, or the positivity rate, over seven days was at 6.6% as of Sunday, an increase from the 6.5% rate reported on Saturday.

Washington County reported nine new positive cases Monday. Health officials said the increase comes from community transmission due to social gatherings where safety practices were not followed. They asked residents to stay away from large gatherings where precautions aren’t taken.

Numbers update from Illinois

Meanwhile, the state announced 1,231 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday and 18 additional virus-related deaths.

Illinois has seen a total of 7,416 deaths during the pandemic as of Monday, officials reported. A total of 172,655 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, while more than 2.5 million people have been tested for COVID-19, including 30,567 since Monday.

The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years, the state reported. Additionally, state health officials reported Monday the preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total tests from July 20-26 is 3.8 percent.

As of last night, 1,417 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 350 patients were in the ICU and 124 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

Here are the latest available statistics for southwestern Illinois counties. The number in parenthesis reflects how the new daily total compares to the prior day total. Subtractions occur when a COVID-19 positive patient is misdiagnosed or moves away from the area.
