A 60-year-old Belleville man was charged with 40 counts related to possession of child pornography on Friday.
The suspect was identified by Belleville police as Richard J. Varady. A search warrant conducted recently at Varady’s home turned up what police described as “many computer files containing child pornography” on his computer.
Belleville police said an investigation touched off after they received a tip from Internet Crimes Against Children, a task force operated by the state attorney general’s office.
Special agents from the attorney general’s office as well as members of the St. Clair County state’s attorney’s office helped police execute the search warrant at the suspect’s apartment on South High Street on Thursday, where Varady was taken into custody.

Varady remained at the St. Clair County Jail on Wednesday with bail set at $100,000.
Police said they have continued their investigation into Varady, but they said they don’t believe he produced the images or had any direct, inappropriate contact with children.
