Police investigating Halloween incident after man involved dies

Granite City police are investigating a Halloween incident where one of the men involved later died.

Lt. Nick Novacich said Monday the Granite City Police Department is investigating an Oct. 31 incident that happened around 8 p.m. near the intersection of B Street and West First Street. Novacich said police are conducting “an ongoing investigation” into the death of Brendon Michael Johns, 18. Johns was involved with what Novacich said was a “disturbance.” According to online records, Johns was arrested the night of the incident.

According to Johns’ obituary, he died Dec. 10 at St. Louis University Hospital from injuries sustained following a physical attack. In an account his family posted on the fundraising site GoFundMe, Johns’ family wrote that he was injured as he was attacked in downtown Granite City while out trick or treating with his family. His family wrote that Johns suffered a broken nose and a damaged eye socket in the incident. Johns’ family wrote that he eventually suffered an infection. He was hospitalized for a week and had one brain surgery before dying the afternoon of Dec. 10, his family wrote.

Johns is survived by his parents, Christina (Short) Lynch of Granite City and Michael Johns of Florida; his fiance, Julissa Arellano and their son, Liam Johns; two sisters and a brother. Memorials may be made to the family. His funeral was scheduled for Monday night at Wojstrom Funeral Home in Granite City.
