A former clothing store in the Schnucks Swansea Plaza is being renovated to make way for a Dollar Tree.

The discount store is scheduled to open Aug. 31 at 2629 N. Illinois St., according to a construction project manager with Dollar Tree.

The site most recently featured a Rainbow clothing store and a Fashion Bug prior to that.

Marco Contractors Inc. of Warrendale, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor who took out a building permit with the village of Swansea. The renovation work on about 10,000 square feet began earlier this month and the work is valued at about $295,000.

Dollar Tree operates more than 14,400 stores in United States and Canada, including 14 in the metro-east.

The Chesapeake, Virginia-based chain announced last month that it plans to open 650 new stores this year.
