Brighton man faces charges after allegedly hitting dog with an ax

A Brighton man struck a dog with an ax because he believed it had a disease or was infected with something that could harm himself and those around him, police say.

Jersey County Sheriff John Wimmersberg said police believe the man, Kyle S. Wahl, was suffering from some kind of mental issue or breakdown at the time.

The dog did survive getting struck by the ax, but was later put down because of its injuries.

Wahl, 39, was charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal on July 24 in Jersey County. Charges allege that Wahl left the wounded dog in a barn to die, failing to seek treatment for its injuries.
