Fishermen find body floating in Mississippi River

Fishermen spotted a body floating in the Mississippi river Thursday morning by the Alton city limits sign.

Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons said authorities had not yet identified the man, but police believe the body is that of a boater from Grafton who went missing on Saturday. Simmons said the boater was pushing his boat off the sandbar when he slipped under the boat and wasn’t seen again.

Simmons said police were waiting for the Madison County coroner’s office to confirm the identity.

Alton Police were working with Missouri Highway Patrol and Illinois State Police on the case.

The body was found in the river near Great River Road at about 11:15 a.m. Thursday.
