In the fog, follow these safe-driving tips

Drivers need to take special care driving in the fog that blanketed our region Monday morning.

The Illinois State Police District 11, based in Collinsville, earlier this year had on Facebook three tips for driving in fog. The tips closely follow those suggested by Travelers Insurance:

▪  Slow down. The state police recommend finding a safe place to park away from driving lanes if visibility is “severely limited.”

▪  Drive with headlights, but not brights. The high-beam lights bounce off the tiny water drops that make up fog, which spreads and reflects more light. Instead, use low-beam lights to be visible to other drivers.

▪  Stay focused.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, fog contributes to 1 percent of vehicle crashes, but 2 percent of weather-related crash deaths.
