Horse killed after being hit by semi on Interstate 57

One horse was killed late Thursday afternoon after it was ejected from its trailer and struck by a semi on Interstate 57. Four other horses survived; one person suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Illinois State Police said a pickup truck driven by Brandi Turner, of New London, Mo., was hauling a trailer with five horses.

Turner has been charged with using unsafe equipment. While driving southbound on Interstate 57 in Franklin County, a tire detached, according to the State Police, causing the pickup and trailer to jackknife. The trailer overturned, and the five horses were ejected from the trailer.

A semi that had been behind Turner hit one of the horses, killing the horse and causing “significant damage” to the truck.

Illinois State Police shut the highway down in both northbound and southbound lanes for about 45 minutes while the four live horses were transferred to a different trailer. Both the pickup and semi were towed away. London was taken to the hospital and treated and released; the semi’s driver was unhurt.
