Men cut couple off in car, attempt to rob them after casino night with friends

A Godfrey couple were returning home from a night with friends at Hollywood Casino on Monday when they were cut off in their car by two armed men who attempted to rob them, according to police.

The couple were driving home from the St. Louis casino around 2:30 a.m. Monday when they turned onto Union School Road from Humbert Road in Godfrey, Madison County Sheriff’s Office Capt. T. Mike Dixon wrote in a release.

At that point, two masked men in an older, white four-door car cut the couple’s car off and approached them with guns. One of the men reportedly shattered the driver’s side door window with a gun, Dixon wrote.

The men then pulled the couple out of their car and struck one of them in the head with a gun. That person later refused treatment at the scene, Dixon wrote.

Dixon added later that a review of Hollywood Casino surveillance footage indicates the men did not follow the couple from the casino.

“Although the victim’s didn’t report shots being fired during the event, deputies located evidence at the scene which proves at least one round was fired into the victim’s vehicle during the attempted armed robbery,” Dixon wrote.

While the armed men were searching for money in the car, the couple fled. according to Dixon. They did not take money or other items from the couple.

The two men got back in their own car and drove toward Alton, Dixon wrote. They were reportedly wearing hooded sweatshirts and partial face masks.
