Trucker told police he blacked out before crashing into bank sign
A truck driver reportedly blacked out around 8 a.m. Wednesday and crashed into a Freeburg bank sign, according to police.
The driver called 911 at 8:08 a.m. and told dispatchers he had blacked out and crashed in front of Midland States Bank on State Street, Freeburg Police Chief Michael J. Schutzenhofer said.
“When we arrived on scene there were people assisting him out of the truck,” Schutzenhofer said.
The truck driver, who works for an Evansville, Indiana, company called Walt’s Drive-A-Way Services, was taken to Belleville Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.
Illinois State Police officials were assisting Freeburg officers with the ongoing investigation, Schutzenhofer said.
The chief said no other cars were involved in the accident and no one else was injured.
He said officers were still working Thursday to determine why the driver blacked out.
Midland States Bank officials did not immediately return a call for comment.
