One person died in a crash on Illinois 15 between Nashville and Ashley on Thursday morning and another was seriously injured.
Crews closed Illinois 15 between about Illinois 127 and U.S. 51, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Christopher Watson, until about 11 a.m. after the crash at about 6:15 a.m.
Two medical helicopters were called to the accident scene. Matthew McKinley, 35, of Coulterville, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Michael Barfield Jr., 40, of Nashville, Illinois, was seriously injured and flown via medical helicopter from the scene to an area hospital after being extricated from his car.
A statement from the Illinois State Police indicated that McKinley was driving a 2005 Cadillac westbound on Illinois Route 15, while Barfield drove a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound. At one point, the Cadillac came into the eastbound lane and struck the Chevrolet head-on, police said.
Illinois Route 15 was closed for nearly five hours during scene cleanup and crash investigation.
