Several crashes delay morning commute in Southern Illinois

Several highway crashes in the Collinsville area had lanes blocked early Friday morning as crews investigated and cleared the accident scenes.

Just before 8 a.m. Illinois State Police posted to Facebook that Interstate 55 traffic was back to its “normal Friday flow.”

However, Illinois State Police reported the following crashes on the agency’s Facebook page during the 7 a.m. hour:

▪ A serious crash early Friday morning closed all northbound lanes of Interstate 55/70 in Collinsville near the Center Street exit.

▪ Another accident occurred on Interstates 55 near the North Bluff Road exit in Collinsville, a spokesman said southbound traffic was down to one lane.

▪ A vehicle caught fire in the southbound lanes of Interstate 255 near Horseshoe Lake Road. Officials warned motorists to expect delays in the area.

▪ A serious crash overnight at 3:27 a.m. had Illinois 161 at Summerfield South Road closed in the 7 a.m. hour as crews worked to reconstruct and investigate the accident.

Authorities asked motorists to use alternative routes.

After posting about these crashes, authorities reminded drivers to be safe while on the roads.

“We realize it’s Friday but please keep your ‘thinking caps’ on this morning,” they wrote. “You’re driving vehicles which weigh thousands of pounds. Operating a motor vehicle is serious business! Leave plenty of room between vehicles and be prepared to stop quickly due to traffic congestion.”

As of 8 a.m. Friday a spokesman for Illinois State Police said the agency had responded to 148 crashes in 2018 so far.
