Here's how cheddar popcorn is made at Abe's Gourmet Popcorn in Belleville
Dave Schoenborn isn’t surprised that people voted for Cheddar Overload in an informal poll to pick the next new flavor at Abe’s Gourmet Popcorn.
His other three cheddar flavors — Cheddar, White Cheddar and Jalapeno White Cheddar — are best sellers.
“People really love our cheddar because we use a real cheese-based paste instead of powder flavoring,” said Schoenborn, who owns the downtown Belleville shop and adjoining Lincoln Theatre with his wife, Sandy.
They conducted the poll over the weekend to celebrate National Popcorn Day, which was Friday, with help from Belleville News-Democrat reporter Cara Anthony. She invited people to contact her by email, phone or Facebook post.
People had three flavor choices. Nine voted for Cheddar Overload, five for Chocolate Cheesecake and one for Strawberries and Champagne.
“I thought the Strawberries and Champagne sounded really cool,” Schoenborn said.
He’s thinking about making a batch of it, even though it came in last, because it seems fitting for Valentine’s Day.
Another 15 people in the poll came up with their own flavors, including Chocolate and Black Cherry, Coffee, Ghost Pepper, Fruity Pebbles, Sweet Chili, Truffle Shuffle and Bacon. One man even suggested Stag Beer flavor.
Popcorn at Abe’s sells for $5.75 a bag.
“We have over 70 recipes, but some of them are seasonal,” Schoenborn said. “We normally have 30 to 50 on the shelves.”
