Altamont High School’s vice-principal and athletic director was killed by a train early Sunday morning in Effingham, according to the county coroner.
Todd Arnold, 53, was apparently walking across the tracks at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday in Effingham when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train. Preliminary investigation shows the lights and gates at the crossing were working, XFM 97.9 radio reported. There were no injuries to anyone on the train, which was delayed more than three hours.
Arnold had worked with the Altamont Unit 10 School District for more than 20 years, the school’s superintendent told the Effingham Daily News.

Under his tenure, the Altamont High School’s 2016 homecoming was a girl’s basketball game, instead of a boy’s basketball game.
“I’ll be honest with you. It was just like any other year,” Arnold told the Daily News at the time. “The crowd was down a little, but there was a lot of the student body there, a good crowd and the band played like they always do. You really couldn’t tell a difference until the introductions.”
